A garage should be used to keep your car secure. Everybody knows that. However, half of Britain’s garages aren’t used for motors at all, rather they’re just extended storage for all the clutter we’ve built up over the years.

It’s a shame as given the right care and attention, a garage is effectively an extra room and could add real value to your property. Here are eight ways to transform your garage and stop it from becoming a dumping ground.

Workshop

Can’t get enough of DIY? Designate part (or all) of your garage space to creating a workshop for all those DIY projects around the house. Alternatively, a garage be a great place for getting the kids into a hobby such as model building and crafts.

Man Cave (or Woman Cave)

Everyone needs an oasis of calm after a busy day. A converted garage with a variety of home comforts could be just what you need. Think television, sound system, comfy sofa or anything else to help you relax and unwind.

Home Office

More of us are working at home these days. If you don’t have the space, a garage could be easily converted into a home office. It could also be used by young students for homework. It would certainly divert their attention away from the TV or games console in their bedrooms!

Greenhouse

Not exactly a common sight but with a few changes your garage could become a shrine to your love of horticulture. Install windows, lights and a workstation for tools to create a gardener’s paradise.

Play Area

Soft play centres are very popular so why not consider transforming the garage? Put down soft rubber mats and be sure to create some easily defined, safe boundaries. Your little ones will love you for it!

Family Game Room

Why limit your-self to a man cave? A games room could be fun for the whole family. Table tennis, pool, table football or a range of different board games would all be perfect for your garage. Just be sure to make it a bit more homely with rugs and family photographs. Bring on Game Night!

Gym

Convert your garage and throw away that expensive gym membership. A garage is perfect for a makeshift gym as they tend to be better ventilated than your home. Less noisy too as it’s separate from the other rooms in your house. Just make sure you put down rubber gym mats to protect the floor and your equipment.

Home Cinema

Are you a movie buff? Then a home cinema could be your golden ticket. Get the best equipment though (think deluxe upholstered seats, HD projector etc.) to stop it becoming a glorified television room.
